With the Top Gun 2 UK release date now scheduled for 2022, as Tom Cruise approaches his 60th birthday, the question is whether or not they've left things just a little too late for the return of Maverick to the big screen. However, there are more than enough fans of the original looking forward to watching the sequel, so here's the latest news on the film, including what we know about the story synopsis, age rating and our parents guide. Sequel to 1986'sTop Gun, the movie is receiving delays since its planned original release in 2019. According to CNet, the release date is now postponed to May 2022. Originally scheduled to be released earlier, the date was bumped up to avoid a major clash at the box office of Tom Cruise's other highly anticipated actioner Mission Impossible 7.
The cast of the movie consists of a list of talented actors with the likes of Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. He joined Screen Rant in late 2016 following a year-long stint with MCU Exchange, which came after first developing an MCU blog of his own. He graduated college in 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Media & Public Communication, with a minor in Media Production.
Every year Cooper looks forward to seeing the latest blockbusters from the likes of Marvel, DC, and Star Wars, but also loves the rush to catch up on Oscar films near the end of the year. When he isn't writing about or watching new releases, Cooper is a fantasy football obsessive and looking to expand his Blu-Ray collection – because physical media is still king! When Black Widow set a pandemic box office record with its $80 million weekend in early July of this year, the National Research Group projected that 81 percent of Americans were confident in the safety of returning to movie theaters.
Since then, however, the Delta variant has caused infection and death rates to spike in the U.S., particularly among the unvaccinated. According to infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, more than 99 percent of the deaths now being caused by COVID are among the unvaccinated, while August showed infection rates in the U.S. had risen by more than 85 percent overall. Paramount didn't want to cherry pick which movies will open in the current climate. In their view, all their filmmakers and stars deserve the same consideration and positioning in a future potential robust box office marketplace. For the time being, this leaves the rest of 2021 without any Paramount releases; their first big feature back is the Spyglass Dimension produced reboot ofScreamon Jan. 14.
Likely the box office performance of this weekend's theaters-only Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will determine how things play out for Eternals. But given Paramount vacating out of fall 2021, things aren't looking great for those hoping Eternals doesn't have to compete against itself on streaming and pirating…. But the further we get past October, the more negotiable things might appear, including the previously late November-slated Top Gun.
Studios are reportedly nervous about four-quadrant films that entire fiscal years are pinned to, like a Tom Cruise action movie. Producers are also painfully aware of the importance of younger moviegoers and the parents who take them to the cinema for such blockbusters. The shifts of releases come as movie theaters around the country are starting to reopen after being closed down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The film industry as a whole has been rocked since the global health crisis first surged last March. Originally slated for release on July 12, 2019, production was postponed to film more complex flight sequences. Then, in 2020, the movie was delayed again (and again…) due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Val Kilmer had campaigned on his social media page that he would like to reprise his role in the film, and by June 2018, The Wrap reported that he will appear in the film. While Bruckheimer and the filmmakers wanted to bring Kilmer back, Cruise was the one who tirelessly insisted in bringing back Kilmer to reprise his role.
In July 2018, Miles Teller was cast in the role of Goose's son, against Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. All three were flown to Cruise's home, the star of the film, for chemistry tests. Later that month, Jennifer Connelly joined the film's cast to play a single mother running a bar near the Naval base. The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on May 27, 2022, by Paramount Pictures. It will also be available to stream on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical debut. It was originally scheduled for release on July 12, 2019, but was postponed to "allow the production to work out all the complex flight sequences".
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and scheduling conflicts, the film experienced further delays. Fans eagerly waiting for the sequel of the 1986 classic "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise will have to wait even longer as it was among a slew of other films delayed by Paramount. This delay follows concerns around rising cases of the delta variant of the coronavirus in the US, as cinema releases underperform at the box office.
More move shuffles are unsurprising given the spread of the Delta variant, and continued concerns over the safety of movie theaters, but it's also disappointing to see big films continue to suffer delays. Paramounts decision to shift its release slate comes amid rising concerns over the impact of the Covid-19 delta variant on theater attendance. Unlike other studios, including Warner Bros. and Disney, Paramount has kept many of its biggest 2021 releases – A Quiet Place Part II, for instance – theatrical-only, rather than experimenting with day-and-date releases on streaming services. After Paramount consulted with experts and their own global team, they decided to move the movies given the current conditions of COVID and its Delta variant around the world. The outlook for global theater attendance is expected next year, which is the opportune time to maximize box office potential, and overall makes the most business sense for the studio's movies.
Recently, Paramount moved Clifford The Big Red Dogout of the fall and will re-date some time in the future. Many studios are using a hybrid approach to film releases, screening them on streaming services and in cinemas at the same time. To be clear, some of the fall 2021 film slate will remain firmly in place no matter what, including blockbusters like MGM and Eon Productions' No Time to Die. But as we analyzed here, the James Bond franchise remains a singular property with its own distinct series of extenuating circumstances. Additionally, the film's UK release date of Sept. 30 and U.S. release of Oct. 8 are likely too close to scrap without costing a small fortune that would come from backing out of arrangements with third parties, including exhibitors. Other October releases—particularly seasonally dependent and more adult-skewing ones like Halloween Kills or even Last Night in Soho—could also have decent reason to remain where they are.
The studio also teased upcoming adventure titleThe Lost City starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt and Daniel Radcliffe; plus Damien Chazelle's Hollywood-themed dramaBabylon, and Chinese zodiac action-adventureThe Tiger's Apprentice. In February 2020, toy manufacturer Matchbox company announced that they were releasing a series of Top Gun die-cast models and products, including an F-14 Tomcat, Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, North American P-51 Mustang and role play items. They were scheduled for public release on June 1, 2020, despite the delayed theatrical release. In August 2018, Powell joined the cast of the film in a pilot trainee role that was enlarged for him, having impressed star Tom Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as executives at Paramount Pictures and Skydance, with his auditions.
In October 2018, Kara Wang, Jack Schumacher, Greg Tarzan Davis, Jake Picking, Raymond Lee, Jean Louisa Kelly and Lyliana Wray joined the cast of the film. Additionally, McKenzie was forced to drop out of the film after signing onto Lost Girls. In November 2018, Chelsea Harris joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role. There was a lot of secrecy surrounding the film, especially in terms of the story synopsis, but the Top Gun 2 UK release date has now been moved to 2022. It was initially slated for Friday the 17th July 2020, so it will work out as a delay of just under two years. The latest date change for the UK moves the film to the 27th May 2022, so it will no longer be out over here before Christmas 2021.
"After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him," it reads. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. According to a report from The Sun, the car and the script of the upcoming movie have been successfully recovered by the police.
A source told the newspaper that the movie was facing several challenges ahead of its release, however, the end of the rocky road is finally in sight. The source also revealed that filmmakers were concerned about the copy being leaked which would have caused another postponement to the release date on top of the COVID-induced delays. Paramount has already shifted some of its release strategy towards its streaming service Paramount+ due to the pandemic, with a new Paranormal Activity film set to be released exclusively on the platform in October. Maverick is back in the cockpit in the first trailer for the Top Gun sequel and it looks like his flying skills have only improved with age. The new clip doesn't give away many specifics about the plot, but it does reveal that the infamous fighter pilot is now a teacher for a new generation of recruits.
It also gives quick glimpses at a new romance and seems to imply that Maverick has not moved on from the death of his best friend, Goose. Of course, Top Gun just wouldn't be the same without Tom Cruise, or Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The actor shared a behind the scenes look at filming and fans got very excited about the sneak peek. The COVID-19 pandemic as well as some scheduling issues have delayed the film's release, but barring any further issues, the film will hit cinemas on November 19, 2021. Many other blockbusters have been delayed or moved to streaming because of the pandemic, but some - such as Black Widow, Fast & Furious 9 and Suicide Squad - have finally hit cinemas in recent months.
He then closed the presentation with a further surprise – the first 13 minutes of Top Gun Maverick. The sequel will be released on May 27, 2022, having moved on six occasions, at first due to additional filming and then on several occasions due to the pandemic. After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. The same month, the movie's second trailer was released, introducing the new batch of trainees whom Maverick is going to be taking under his wing. The video also teases that one of the trainees is going to die during an exercise and shows a fight breaking out between Maverick and Rooster. A teaser for the movie was also released during Super Bowl 2020, which briefly reveals that Maverick is going to be running into some trouble with the top brass during the course of the film.
The studio's delays are due to the fact that concerns over the delta variant have reportedly affected cinema attendance, which is not good news for the most expensive Hollywood movies. Preliminary production on the film officially started on May 30, 2018, in San Diego, California. During late August a 15-person film crew from Paramount and Bruckheimer Films were aboard the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USSAbraham Lincoln to shoot flight deck operations. In mid-February 2019, Cruise and the production crew were sighted on board USSTheodore Roosevelt at NAS North Island.
In March, filming was completed at NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, Washington. On June 19, 2019, at CineEurope in Barcelona, attendees were able to watch for the first time some early footage of the film from a special Paramount presentation. During the presentation the President of International Theatrical Distribution Mark Viane and co-president of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution Mary Daily appeared in flight clothes.
Maverick Top Gun Release Date We're expecting more cast details to be announced in the build-up to the release to go alongside Tom Cruise reprising his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. However, stars that have been confirmed so far are Miles Teller, Jennifer Connoly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Glen Powell and Lewis Pullman. Van Kilmer is also rumoured to be included on the project, returning as the Iceman, but at the moment it's unconfirmed. The first film had its cinematic release in 1986 when Cruise was in his mid twenties and while there are no details in terms of how far into Maverick's future it's set, it needs to be pretty distant to fit the 30 years outside the film. The miraculous ageing properties of Tom Cruise's face give it a little artistic license, and in all fairness movie magic will go a long way, so it's going to be interesting to see how it all comes together. The highly-anticipated sequel, which sees Tom Cruise reprise his role as Maverick, will now release in cinemas on May 27, 2022, instead of November 19, 2021.

The shock comedy franchise starring Johnny Knoxville is now scheduled to be released next February, a delay of four months. The filming of the seventh Ethan Hunt film has been delayed several times after COVID outbreaks, with Cruise determined to carry on shooting throughout the pandemic. Tom Cruise fans will have to wait a while longer to see his post-pandemic big screen return, after two of his highly-anticipated blockbuster sequels were pushed back again due to a surge of COVID-19. After multiple delays, the blockbuster flicks have had their release date pushed back once again due to the delta variant surge amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Miles Teller plays one of the most important new characters, appearing in the movie as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's late RIO and best friend, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. Rooster is a pilot trainee and fans can probably expect some friction between him and Maverick. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick arrives, his reckless attitude puts him at odds with the other pilots, particularly the cool and collected Iceman . Meanwhile, Maverick also competes for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood .
It was originally scheduled for July 2019, but was delayed for a year due to "logistical reasons". TOM CRUISE movies Top Gun 2 Maverick and Mission Impossible 7 have been delayed again and given new release dates by Paramount Pictures. Maverick is now a flight instructor at the Miramar Topgun, where he's guiding the son of his late flying partner, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. But honestly, we don't need much else than amazing aerial shots to be excited for a Top Gun revival.
Talk about a sequel has been swirling for years and now its arrival is imminent . On July 23, 2020, the film was delayed again to July 2, 2021, partially due to scheduling conflicts with Cruise, as well as the recent delays of Mulan and Tenet due to the rise of COVID-19 cases. On September 1, 2021, the film was delayed again once more to May 27, 2022. Netflix and Apple TV+ tried to purchase the distribution rights to the film, but Paramount has refused to sell them. It will be streamed on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical release.
In June 2020, plastic model manufacturer Revell company released a series of 1/48 scale Top Gun plastic models, including an F-14A Tomcat and a F/A-18E Super Hornet based upon the aircraft in the movie. These are versions of previous Revell offerings with modified decals and markings. In July 2020, Hasbro announced a Top Gun themed Transformers toy, "Maverick", which released later in the year. After Scott's suicide, the sequel's future remained in question, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer remained committed to the project, especially given Cruise's and Kilmer's interest. Development of the film began in 2010 when Paramount Pictures made offers to Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott to make a sequel to Top Gun. Christopher McQuarrie had also received an offer to write the sequel's screenplay, which was rumored to have Tom Cruise's character Maverick in a smaller role.
Peter Craig, Justin Marks, who described the film as a dream project, Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz would be credited as screenwriters on the project. The age rating for the trailer above for Top Gun 2 Maverick is PG, but we're not expecting that to have much impact on the parents guide for the film release. The British Board of Film Classification won't put out the official Top Gun 2 age rating for the UK until much closer to the release date, but the 12 rating for the first film is a pretty good guide for what to expect from the sequel.
The parents guide notes for the 1986 film were a single use of strong language, moderate sex scenes and references. Other highly anticipated releases remain on the schedule for 2021. No Time To Die, expected to be the final James Bond film starring Daniel Craig, is still expected to come out on 30 September 2021 in the UK and 8 October 2021 in the US.
It's an interesting move to make, as The Walt Disney Company have moved away from the joint cinema and Disney+ Premier Access release model with films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to solely focus on the big screen. According to The Wall Street Journal, both Netflix and Apple asked Paramount if the studio would sell the movie to them for a streaming debut. However, Paramount seems set on a cinema release for the sequel as of January 2021. The sequel, hopefully satisfying our need for speed, should have been released on July 12, 2019.
